As more and more mortgage lenders are closing their doors, a common problem is the confusion that the transaction causes the borrower. Fortunately, there is a federal law that protects the consumer when this happens. To better understand the payment process, lenders can keep the loan in house. This is called a portfolio loan. Or they can sell or assign it to an investor. The most prominent investors iin the United States are the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. (Freddie Mac) and the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae).
